Sending to a colorist
Send ProRes and R3D to your colorist, folders and all.
Camera originals, ProRes media, the timeline and your reference in one transfer of up to 1 TB. Nothing is recompressed, the folder structure comes through intact, and it’s a flat $14.99 a month.
A grade package that relinks the first time
The media, folders intact
Send camera originals as the card folders they came in. RED clips live in .RDM and .RDC folders that hold the .R3D files and their metadata, and relinking depends on them. ProRes media can go as a folder of files.
The timeline
Export an XML, AAF or EDL from your edit, with the media referenced (not consolidated into new files, unless your colorist asked for that).
A reference export
A low-res export of the locked cut with burned-in timecode lets the colorist check the conform shot by shot.
LUTs and notes
Camera or show LUTs, the delivery spec, and any look references. Add a note to the transfer so it travels with the files.
Send, and see when it’s pulled
Upload everything in one transfer. On Pro, a delivery receipt tells you when the colorist has downloaded, so the session can be booked with confidence.
For a sense of size: ProRes 422 HQ at 1080p and 29.97 fps runs about 220 Mb/s, roughly 100 GB an hour of footage. 4K, higher frame rates and ProRes 4444 are several times that, and camera raw varies with the camera’s settings. Don’t zip video first: it’s already compressed, so a zip saves almost nothing.
Made for big, many-file post handoffs
Up to 1 TB per transfer
A full camera-original pull fits in one send on Pro, for a flat $14.99 a month.
Folders stay folders
Upload a folder and the colorist downloads the same structure, file names untouched.
Never recompressed
Byte-for-byte delivery. What you upload is what they grade.
No per-GB fees
Send the 800 GB pull and the re-send after a recut for the same monthly price.
Picks up after a dropped connection
Uploads and downloads resume where they stopped, so a Wi-Fi blip doesn’t restart a 500 GB transfer.
Proof it was pulled Pro
A receipt when the colorist downloads, with the time and approximate location.
Ask your colorist to download on a computer in Chrome or Edge. Those browsers save straight to disk; Safari, Firefox and phones hold the download in memory first, so very large files can’t finish there.
Sending to a colorist FAQ
How do I send ProRes or R3D files to a colorist?
Upload the camera originals or ProRes media with the folder structure intact, plus the timeline (XML, AAF or EDL), a reference export and any LUTs. Send the link to the colorist and set it to last until they've pulled everything.
How big are ProRes files?
It depends on the flavor, resolution and frame rate. ProRes 422 HQ at 1080p and 29.97 fps runs about 220 Mb/s, roughly 100 GB an hour, and 4K or ProRes 4444 is several times larger. Your folder size is the number that matters.
Should I zip R3D or ProRes before sending?
No. Video files are already compressed, so zipping saves almost nothing and adds an unzip step. Send the folders as they are. Send Atlas keeps the folder structure.
Do I need to keep the RED folder structure?
Yes. RED clips are stored in folders (.RDM and .RDC) that hold the .R3D files and their metadata. Send the card folders as they are so the colorist's software can relink them.
Is there a file size limit?
Free accounts send up to 15 GB per transfer. Pro sends up to 1 TB per transfer for a flat $14.99 a month, with no per-gigabyte or per-download fees.
Will the files be recompressed?
No. Files are stored and delivered byte for byte, exactly as you uploaded them.
Hand off the grade in one transfer.
